AMSA's Government Affairs Department keeps you up-to-date on legal, legislative, political and regulatory issues facing the moving and storage industry.

The Government Withholding Relief Coalition (AMSA is a member) has sent letters to the House and Senate asking that the 3% withholding requirement on government contracts be included as in jobs legislation being developed by Congress.

Read the latest U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on FMCSA enforcement of consumer protection in the household goods moving industry. The report, “Household Goods Moving Industry – Progress Has Been Made in Enforcement, but Increased Focus on Consumer Protection Is Needed,” is extremely supportive of positions and statements that AMSA and our members have taken regarding the need and ways to strengthen consumer protection with respect to the household goods moving industry and to rid the industry of illegitimate, rogue movers.

Check Out the US Chamber’s New Publication on Union Organizing Legislation  The US Chamber of Commerce is now offering a briefing book analyzing the Employee Free Choice Act's three provisions: card check certification for union organizing, compulsory interest arbitration of first contracts, and increased penalties on employers.  The book explains each provision and rebuts common rhetoric used by organized labor in supporting EFCA.  Although the book is written for readers who are not labor lawyers, appendices include the bill text and a comparison between the National Labor Relations Act as it now reads and as EFCA would amend it, with analysis. The book concludes that no part of EFCA can be justified and that it is in the best interests of employees and employers alike if the bill is never enacted. Download the briefing book here.
